Professional athletes Ken Johnson and Charity Butler will speak at a free community event on Tuesday, October 30, from 7:00-8:30 pm at Christian Children's Home of Ohio in Wooster. The pair will talk about their illustrious careers and how their Christian faith has impacted their lives. The event, which will be held in the organization's Worship and Retreat Center, is free and open to the public and will include refreshments and an opportunity to meet Mr. Johnson and Ms. Butler.
Johnson was a starting defensive lineman for the Cincinnati Bengals for eight years in the 1970s. Originally an All-Big Ten player at Indiana University, where he was voted most valuable player during his junior and senior years, Johnson was drafted by the Cleveland Cavaliers, but opted to play in the NFL because of his athletic talents. He is a pastor in Atlanta, and travels to schools sharing a message of perseverance and building character with elementary to high school students nationwide.
Butler received All-American athletic and academic honors in 2004, at the University of Southern Mississippi, where she played on the Conference USA championship team. She is a professional fast pitch softball player, having played internationally for five years. She was a member of the Swedish National Championship team in 2009 and batted .610 that season. Butler has been recognized by Gatorade as its Will-to-Win National Athlete of the Year, and by ESPN The Magazine for her All-American honors. “I have struggled with finding worth in empty places: accomplishing, competing and performing,” says Butler, a Florida resident. “After a series of rather bizarre learning experiences, I now have a new perspective. My worth is not in doing more, but in being all I was created to be. Today, I have true purpose, lasting hope, and a passion for sharing them with others.”
